The Nikon F2 is a fully mechanical camera. This means it does not require batteries to operate the shutter. The battery is only used to power the camera's light meter.
It uses Nikon F-mount lenses. Being one of the oldest F mount cameras, you will be able to use all F-mount lenses from the early non-ai series until the recent D-series. Later lenses will still mount, but you will not have control over the aperture.
When you’re looking for a 35mm SLR the Nikon F2 is often reverted to as the “final boss” or the last camera you’ll ever have to buy. As part of the Nikon Professional line, the Nikon F2 was used by photojournalists, war correspondents and many other working photographers of the 70s and 80s. It’s a solid, fully mechanical camera, with swappable focusing screens, prisms and backs, allowing you to build the perfect setup for your shooting style.
We love the F2 so much that we wrote a quick review, you can read it here!
Due to the age of this camera and the nature of old light meters we can’t guarantee that the light meter still works. This isn’t an issue as the camera will function perfectly without batteries. To meter a scene before taking a picture we recommend using an external light-meter or a light-meter app on your phone. Alternatively you can use the foolproof sunny-16 rule.
