The 35S is a fully mechanical camera. This means it does not require batteries to operate the shutter. The battery is only used to power the camera’s light meter. It was designed to use 1.35V MR9 mercury batteries, which are no longer available. It’s possible to use 1.35V zinc-air batteries for the lightmeter.
It features a collapsible Rollei HFT 40mm 2.8 Sonnar lens, with a classic 5 element design.
The 35S is a cult classic compact camera. As a favourite among street photographers and those looking for a small but mighty travel camera. The tiny form factor, fully mechanical operation and sharp Sonnar lens make the Rollei 35S the perfect camera for daily use.
Due to the age of this camera and the nature of old lightmeters we can’t guarantee that the light meter still works. This isn’t an issue as the camera will function perfectly without any batteries. To meter a scene before taking a picture simply use an external light-meter or a light-meter app on your phone (we recommend Lux or myLightmeter), alternatively you can use the foolproof sunny-16 rule.
