The G2 is the camera that the G1 was always pointing towards. Contax took everything that made the G1 special, a titanium body, autofocus, Carl Zeiss lens compatibility, and pushed it further in every direction. The autofocus is faster and more reliable, combining active infrared and passive phase-detection so it locks on accurately even in low light. The shutter reaches 1/6000s in aperture priority mode, which is faster than almost anything else in 35mm film. The viewfinder zooms automatically to match whichever G-mount lens you attach, and the overall shooting experience is fluid and confident. Being body only, it pairs with any Contax G-mount lens, and the 45mm f/2 Planar or 35mm f/2 Planar are both worth considering if you’re building a setup. For someone who wants the quality of a Leica system with autofocus and a more modern feel, the G2 is one of the finest options film has to offer.
