What I like about the Pentax ME is how well-considered it is for its size. When it came out in 1976 it was one of the smallest 35mm SLRs ever made, and it still feels impressively compact today. The aperture priority system is very simple to use: you set the aperture on the lens, the camera reads the light and selects the shutter speed, and the chosen speed is shown in the viewfinder by LED indicators. This makes it a natural camera for someone learning to understand depth of field and how aperture affects images, without having to worry about exposure. The Pentax K-mount is one of the great lens systems in film photography, giving you access to a wide range of sharp and affordable SMC Pentax lenses. The 28mm f/3.5 fitted here is a proper wide-angle prime, great for street, travel, and architecture. One practical bonus: if the battery runs out, the mechanical 1/100s shutter speed keeps the camera working.
