The Weathermatic 35DL is one of those cameras that is immediately recognisable, and for good reason. The bright yellow body is not just a design choice, it makes the camera highly visible above and below the water, where it is rated to a depth of 5 metres. Launched in 1987, it was Minolta's first watertight dual-lens autofocus camera, and the concept is clever: a single switch toggles between a 35mm f/3.5 wide lens and a 50mm f/5.6 standard lens, with the viewfinder magnification adjusting to match. Above water it uses infrared autofocus; below water it switches automatically to fixed-focus mode, covering subjects between 1.2 and 3.6 metres. The oversized controls are designed to work with wet hands or gloves. A genuinely useful camera for the beach, pool, hiking in rain, or anywhere a regular camera would not survive.
