The AV-1 is the aperture priority companion to the AE-1, and for many photographers it's actually the more natural way to shoot. Where the AE-1 has you set the shutter speed and let the camera choose the aperture, the AV-1 works the other way around: you pick the aperture and the camera handles the shutter speed. This gives you direct control over depth of field, which is often what matters most, whether you're isolating a subject with a wide aperture or keeping a landscape sharp from front to back. The backlight compensation button is a thoughtful touch that quickly corrects for subjects lit from behind, a common problem with automatic cameras. The 35mm f/3.5 FD lens is a solid wide-angle option that's well suited to travel, street photography, and interiors. Like all A-series Canon cameras, it takes the full range of Canon FD lenses, which are plentiful and affordable on the second-hand market.
