The Canonet QL19 sits in a sweet spot that is easy to overlook. Introduced in 1965 alongside the more celebrated QL17, it shares the same solid build, the same QL quick film loading system, and the same shutter priority auto exposure and manual override, differing only in its f1.9 rather than f1.7 maximum aperture. In practice that distinction is barely noticeable, and the 45mm f1.9 Canon lens is sharp, capable, and produces images with a clean and pleasing rendering across a wide range of apertures. The coupled rangefinder is accurate and comfortable to use, the leaf shutter is quiet and fires without any battery at all, and the aperture value is displayed in the viewfinder so you always know what the camera is doing. A well-made, dependable, and very enjoyable rangefinder that suits street, travel, and everyday photography equally well.
