The Canon F-1 is one of the cameras that defined professional 35mm photography. Introduced in 1971 as Canon's answer to the Nikon F series, it was built to survive anything: rated to 100,000 shutter actuations, tested from -30 to 60°C, and constructed entirely from metal with a horizontally-travelling foil shutter that fires at 1/2000s. It offered Canon's first true professional system with interchangeable viewfinders and focusing screens, and the FD lens mount gave access to one of the finest lens ranges of the era. The shutter is fully mechanical and works without any battery at all. Paired with the 50mm f1.4 FD lens, one of the sharpest and most capable standard lenses Canon ever made, this is a combination that produces outstanding results and rewards every photographer who takes the time to learn it properly.
