Released in 1986 and named European Camera of the Year, it was Canon's landmark compact of the era, built around a sharp 38mm f2.8 lens that produces images with real contrast and warmth. The f2.8 aperture gives it a meaningful low-light advantage over slower compacts of the same era, and the infrared triangulation autofocus is accurate and reliable. The ergonomics are unusually thoughtful for a point and shoot: the slanted grip allows you to hold it flush to your face without your fingers obscuring the viewfinder, and a tilting foot on the base lets you prop the camera at an upward angle for self-timer shots without cutting off anyone's head. Flash can be disabled via a small button on the base, the viewfinder displays focus and flash status clearly, and a self-timer rounds things out.
