We like the AFZ for being a compact and capable camera with a genuinely fast lens that is often overlooked. Released in 1986 and also known as the MAC-7 in Japan, it carries a sharp 35mm f2.8 multi-coated lens in a sliding-cover body with a large, comfortable viewfinder. The active infrared autofocus locks reliably from 0.65m, a fill flash mode gives you a bit of control over how the built-in flash contributes to the exposure, and continuous shooting at 1 frame per second is a practical feature for capturing movement or expression. An LCD panel on top displays mode and frame count clearly. One honest note: the flash has no full off mode, so in very bright conditions it simply won't fire. For outdoor shooting with 400 ISO film, this is rarely an issue in practice.
