The X-700 is the camera that capped off Minolta's manual focus SLR line, and it remains one of the finest cameras they ever made. Introduced in 1981, it was Minolta's first SLR with a full programme mode alongside aperture priority and metered manual, which made it genuinely versatile for photographers at any level. The programme mode favours faster shutter speeds and wider apertures over the conservative settings chosen by many competitors, which tends to produce more natural, lively results. The electronically controlled stepless shutter gives smooth, precise exposures in auto modes, and the exposure compensation dial allows up to ±2EV adjustment in half-stop increments. The viewfinder is large and bright with LED shutter speed display, and the Minolta SR mount opens up a wide and very affordable range of MD and MC lenses. The 50mm f/1.7 Rokkor is an excellent standard lens, sharp and characterful, and a natural match for portraits, street photography, and everyday use.
