The XG-9 sits at the top of Minolta's XG series and is one of the most enjoyable manual focus SLRs they made. Released in 1979, it improved on its predecessors with a brighter Acute-Matte focusing screen that makes composing and focusing a genuine pleasure, depth of field preview, and a particularly clear viewfinder that displays both the aperture set and the shutter speed selected, so you always know exactly what the camera is doing. Aperture priority handles exposure automatically when you want it, and manual is there for complete control. The Minolta SR/MD mount gives access to an excellent range of Rokkor lenses, and the 50mm f2 paired here is a fast, sharp standard lens that suits portraits, street photography, and everyday shooting equally well. A well-made, characterful, and very capable SLR that is often overlooked in favour of the later X-700, but deserves just as much attention.
