The F501 holds a notable place in Nikon's history as the camera that brought autofocus to a wide audience in the Nikon F-mount system. Launched in 1986, it made autofocus accessible and practical for the first time in a mid-range Nikon body, and the system still works reliably today. Single and continuous AF modes cover most shooting situations, and autofocus can be switched off for full manual control whenever you prefer. The exposure system covers programme auto, shutter priority, aperture priority, and metered manual, with exposure compensation available for fine-tuning. The motorised film transport handles advance and rewind automatically at up to 2.5 frames per second. Being an F-mount camera, it's compatible with a wide range of Nikon AI, AF-D, and AF-S lenses, making it an easy entry point into the Nikon system. The 35-70mm zoom is a versatile everyday range, covering wide group shots at 35mm and a comfortable short telephoto at 70mm for portraits.
