Introduced in 2001 as the last camera in Nikon's legendary FM and FE lineage, it achieved something no other camera before or since has done quite the same way: a hybrid shutter that operates mechanically at every speed from 1 second to 1/4000s without any battery at all, while also offering electronically controlled aperture priority auto exposure when a battery is fitted. This means you never lose access to your full shutter speed range, regardless of battery life or conditions. The build is all-metal and exceptional, the viewfinder is large and bright with a classic match-needle display, flash sync is 1/250s, and the Nikon AI F-mount gives access to one of the largest and finest lens libraries ever made. Paired with the 50mm f1.8 Nikkor, a sharp and capable standard lens, this is a combination that is very hard to improve on for manual focus film photography.
