We like the Pino 35 for being one of the most refreshingly honest cameras ever made. Introduced in 1984 as Pentax's entry-level compact, it strips photography right back to the essentials: a sharp 3-element 38mm f3.8 lens, a fixed 1/125s shutter, and a lens ring you turn to match sunny, cloudy-sun, or cloudy conditions, which adjusts the aperture accordingly across a range of f3.8 to f19. There is no autofocus because there is no focusing at all, everything beyond 1.5m is sharp by design. A red LED warns of low light in the viewfinder but does not lock the shutter, and the mechanical action works entirely without batteries. The camera is light, manual-wind, and almost indestructible. A brilliant first camera for anyone who wants to understand how photography actually works.
