We like the Auto Shot for being a beautifully made and completely battery-free viewfinder camera from 1964 with a genuinely unusual personality. The selenium meter ring around the lens powers the fully automatic exposure system without any battery, selecting the aperture automatically at a fixed 1/125s shutter speed, and a red flag appears in the viewfinder if there is not enough light. The four-zone focus scale, covering head shot, body shot, group, and scenery, makes framing and focusing fast and intuitive. One of the most distinctive features is the spring motor film advance: wind it up and it automatically advances the film after each shot, meaning you never have to touch the advance lever between frames. The heavy die-cast aluminium body feels exceptionally solid and the 35mm f2.8 Rikenon lens produces sharp, contrasty results. A characterful and highly original camera.
