The Yashica-635 is one of those cameras that earns its place in a collection, and once you shoot with it you tend to understand why people hold onto them for decades. It's a twin lens reflex camera, which means you compose your shot looking down into a waist-level viewfinder at a large, bright ground glass image, giving you a very different and considered relationship with your subject compared to holding a camera up to your eye. The results on 120 film are beautiful, rich 6x6 square negatives with the characteristic depth and tonal quality that only medium format can deliver. What makes the 635 special amongst TLRs is its ability to also shoot standard 35mm film using an adapter kit, which transforms the 80mm lens into something closer to a portrait focal length on the smaller format. The Yashikor 80mm f3.5 lens is fully manual, sharp at mid apertures, and has a slightly characterful rendering with soft edges wide open that many photographers find very appealing. The shutter is cocked separately from the film advance, which means double exposures are straightforward if you want to experiment. There is no built-in light meter, which encourages you to learn exposure properly, and the whole experience of shooting with this camera slows you down in the very best way.
