Released in 1981 as the follow-up to the enormously successful AE-1, it added a fully automatic programme mode to the already capable shutter priority and manual modes, making it one of the most versatile entry-level SLRs ever made. In programme mode the camera sets both shutter speed and aperture for you, shutter priority lets you choose the speed while the camera handles the rest, and full manual gives you complete creative control. All three are genuinely useful depending on what you're shooting. The Canon FD mount gives access to a wide range of affordable and excellent lenses, and the 35mm f2.8 included here is a lovely wide angle choice that gives a broader field of view than a standard lens, making it particularly well suited to street photography, travel, and environmental portraits.
