The 90mm Sonnar is the portrait lens of the Contax G system. At 90mm, the focal length gives you a natural compression and flattering perspective that works particularly well for people, whether in a controlled setting or out in the street. The f/2.8 aperture gives you enough background separation to isolate a subject cleanly, and the Zeiss T* coating means colour and contrast are rich without looking overdone. It’s also a compact and light telephoto, which makes it easy to carry alongside the G1 or G2 without adding much bulk to the kit. Beyond portraits, it handles travel and detail work well. Autofocus is driven by the camera body, as with all G-mount lenses.

For everyday use, I usually recommend Kodak Gold 200 or Kodak Ultramax 400 as both are super versatile, offer beautiful, rich colours, and are quite forgiving.

If you’re looking for black-and-white film, Ilford XP2 400 is a great option for ease of use and rich exposure latitude. Alternatively, Foma 100 is also great and will give you a bit more contrast and a grainier look.
