Description
The Contax RTS was a landmark camera when it arrived in 1975. It was the result of a collaboration between Yashica and Carl Zeiss, styled by the Porsche Design studio, and built to compete directly with the Leica R system at the top end of the market. The name stands for Real Time System, and the whole philosophy behind it was to create a camera and lens system centred on optical excellence. The electronically controlled shutter, aperture priority automatic exposure, and TTL centre-weighted metering made it one of the most capable cameras of its day, and the build quality has held up well. The Contax/Yashica bayonet mount means it takes the full range of Carl Zeiss C/Y lenses, which are among the finest 35mm lenses ever made, and also Yashica ML lenses for a more affordable option. The 50mm f/1.7 Zeiss Planar is a superb standard lens, sharp and characterful, and an excellent match for everyday photography and portraits. A serious camera for serious photographers.
