We like the A4 for being a compact, well-made, and genuinely capable everyday camera that is easy to overlook and hard not to enjoy. Released in 1989, it is historically interesting as the direct design basis for the celebrated Konica Big Mini series, and it shows in the quality. The 35mm f3.5 Konica lens is sharp and contrasty for a camera of this size, and the infrared autofocus is reliable with focus lock available on a half-press. A close-up mode on the top of the camera reduces the minimum focus distance to just 35cm for detail shots, which is a practical and useful feature. Fully automatic exposure, motorised film advance and rewind, and a built-in flash with auto, fill, and off modes keep things simple. At just 190g it slips into any pocket without effort.
