Mamiya is best known for their medium format cameras, so finding one of their 35mm compacts is always a pleasant surprise. The U was released in 1981 and is one of the last 35mm cameras the brand ever made before turning their full attention to medium format. It is a very compact, blocky little camera with a distinctive design, and the Sekor f/2.8 lens is genuinely sharp with good contrast and a rendering that feels a bit more characterful than your average 1980s compact. Exposure is fully automatic and the pop-up flash is there when you need it, but pleasingly it only fires when you choose to use it. Focusing is done via four zone settings on the lens (1m, 1.5m, 3m, and infinity), using simple icons that make it intuitive once you get used to it. Film advance is manual via a thumbwheel, which gives it a satisfying, deliberate feel. A compact camera worth seeking out for anyone who appreciates a less common name with a great lens.
