The Minolta 5000 AF holds a place in camera history that's easy to overlook. Released in 1985 alongside the 7000 AF, it was part of the first generation of true autofocus SLR cameras, using a phase-detection AF system built into the body rather than the lens, which is the same approach every autofocus camera still uses today. The A-mount lens system it introduced went on to become Sony's E-mount lineage, making this the ancestor of a line that is still very much alive. On a practical level it is a solid, comfortable camera with a clear LCD display showing shutter speed and aperture, a centre-weighted metering system, and programme mode for easy shooting alongside full manual control. Paired with the 35-105mm zoom, it covers a very useful range from wide street scenes to portrait compression, all with fast and reliable autofocus. A historically interesting and genuinely enjoyable camera to shoot with.
