We like the AF-E for being one of Minolta's earliest and most honest compact cameras. Introduced in 1984, it was Minolta's entry-level autofocus camera, designed simply to make good 35mm photography available to everyone. The 35mm f3.5 lens is sharp and capable, the infrared autofocus is reliable, and the whole operation comes down to opening the lens cover, pointing, and pressing the shutter. Film loads, advances, and rewinds automatically. The flash activates itself when light levels are low, and the camera even won Japan's Good Design Award when it came out. It runs on common AA batteries, which is a real practical advantage. A clean, well-made camera that does everything you need without complication, and a great starting point for anyone new to film.
