The L35 AF, nicknamed Pikaichi meaning "top notch" in Japan, was Nikon's first autofocus compact camera and it made an immediate impression. The 35mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens was designed from scratch for this camera and remains one of the finest lenses ever fitted to a point and shoot: sharp, contrasty, and fast enough to handle low-light situations and produce a touch of subject separation that most compacts can't match. Everything is automatic, focus, exposure, film advance and rewind, and the flash syncs at all shutter speeds up to the camera's maximum, which is an unusual and genuinely useful feature for fill flash in daylight. The all-metal construction gives it a reassuring solidity, and it runs on standard AA batteries with enough efficiency for around 100 rolls without flash. A camera that earns its reputation.
