The Nikkormat EL holds a quiet but significant place in camera history. Introduced in 1972, it was Nikon's first SLR with automatic exposure and, notably, the first camera in the world to feature an AE lock, allowing you to meter one part of a scene, hold the reading, and recompose before shooting. It was also the first Nikon to use an electronically controlled shutter, running from a long 4 seconds down to 1/1000s in aperture priority mode. The all-metal body is typically Nikon in its solidity and the Nikon F-mount gives access to a vast range of excellent glass. Paired with the 50mm f1.4 Nikkor, a fast, sharp, and enormously capable standard lens, it is a very rewarding combination for anyone who appreciates a camera with real substance and history.
