It has three distinct shooting modes: full program auto where the camera handles everything, aperture priority for when you want to control depth of field, and a full manual mode that uses spot metering measured off the central focusing circle. That spot metering is particularly useful for tricky lighting, and it is rare to find it at this price point. The 50mm f/1.4 Zuiko lens is one of the nicer lenses from Olympus and will give beautiful results for portraits. If you are looking for a serious, capable SLR with a solid set of automatic modes but also full manual control, the OM-2 SP is well worth considering over more common alternatives like the Canon AE-1 Program or the Pentax MX.
