The Olympus OM30 is nerd’s dream. It’s sitting in an interesting and often overlooked position in the Olympus story. Released in 1983, it was the first Olympus camera to experiment with autofocus, and it brought that ambition into the compact, beautifully finished OM body that photographers already loved. With the 50mm f1.8 Zuiko lens fitted here, the camera operates in full manual or aperture priority, with a focus confirmation indicator in the bright viewfinder letting you know when your subject is sharp. The 12-bar LED display in the viewfinder shows shutter speed clearly and makes setting exposure straightforward. There's also an exposure compensation dial for backlit scenes and tricky light. The Olympus OM mount has access to an excellent range of Zuiko lenses, many of which are still regarded as among the finest optics ever made for a 35mm system. The 50mm f1.8 included here is sharp, compact, and produces images with a clean, pleasing rendering that suits everything from portraits to everyday life.
