Released in 1976 alongside the fully manual MX, the ME took a different approach, offering a compact, elegantly simple body focused entirely on aperture priority automatic exposure. You set the aperture on the lens, the camera reads the light through the lens and sets the shutter speed automatically, and a row of LED indicators in the viewfinder shows you the selected speed. It is an approach that makes shooting quick and natural, freeing you to think about composition and depth of field rather than exposure settings. The vertically-travelling metal shutter is reliable and precise, running steplessly from 8 seconds down to 1/1000s in auto. The Pentax K mount gives access to a large range of excellent and affordable lenses, and the 50mm f2 SMC Pentax is a sharp, compact standard lens that suits the slim character of the ME beautifully.
