The Rollei XF 35 is one of those cameras that tends to be overlooked, and that is precisely what makes it such a good find. Released in 1974, it carries a 40mm f2.3 Sonnar-type lens, a design with serious optical heritage, in a compact and pocketable body with a true coupled rangefinder. The lens produces images with the contrast, warmth, and rendering quality you would expect from a Sonnar derivation, and the f2.3 aperture gives it a genuine low-light advantage over most cameras of its size. Exposure is fully programmatic with the shutter speed linked to the aperture, both values shown by a needle in the bright viewfinder, and a half-press of the shutter button locks the exposure for off-centre subjects. The leaf shutter is quiet and smooth, there is a hot shoe, a self-timer, and a bulb mode for long exposures. A discreet, well-made, and very capable street and travel rangefinder.
