We like the ME1 for being a compact, well-made everyday camera that is much more enjoyable to shoot than its modest reputation suggests. Introduced in Japan in 1970, it carries a sharp 38mm f2.8 Yashinon lens in a small, rounded body that slips easily into a coat pocket. The automatic exposure system handles shutter speed and aperture based on the built-in CdS meter, and the shutter locks if there is not enough light, which is a reassuring feature. Zone focus via pictograms keeps things quick and simple, with a small window in the viewfinder confirming which zone you have selected. The quiet leaf shutter, hot shoe, self-timer, and a needle meter visible in the viewfinder round out a very capable feature set for a camera of this size. A charming and underrated compact that is a pleasure to use every day.
