The Samurai X3.0 is one of the most distinctive film cameras ever made, and that is exactly why I like it. It is a true SLR with a pentaprism viewfinder and a 14-element zoom lens, built into a body styled after the compact video cameras of the late 1980s. The half-frame format means each roll of 36 gives you 72 shots, which is a real advantage with film prices where they are today. The 25-75mm lens is equivalent to 35-105mm on a full-frame camera, giving you a useful range from wide street shots to flattering portrait compression. Everything is fully automatic: exposure, focus, film advance. The landscape orientation of the half-frame makes it natural to shoot and pair two frames together as a diptych. Autofocus can be slow in low light so it rewards a steady hand, but in good light it is a capable and completely unique camera to shoot with.
