The T-AF is where the Yashica T story begins. Released in 1984, it was the first compact camera in the T series to carry the Carl Zeiss Tessar T* lens, and the optics are the reason people still seek this camera out today. The Tessar formula is sharp, contrasty, and handles colour beautifully. The lens cover swings automatically out of the way only at the moment of exposure, protecting the glass at all other times, which is a neat and practical design. Auto exposure handles everything from 1/30s to 1/700s, the motor handles film advance and rewind, and the camera turns on and off via a sliding cover over the shutter button. The flash is a manually deployed pop-up rather than firing automatically, which is actually welcome if you prefer to shoot without flash by default. A straightforward camera built around a genuinely excellent lens.
